The Notebook's Story

Why this site exists
Field Notes, Not a Brochure
Bopstarcticmingl started as a shared notebook kept by a small group of travellers, writers and former expedition staff who kept getting the same questions from friends: Is Svalbard safe? Will I see a bear? What is it actually like on a ship in the ice? Glossy brochures answered with sunsets. We wanted to answer with the practical, honest detail we wished we had known.
The result is a set of chapters built around real places — Longyearbyen, Ilulissat, Vatnajökull, the Fram Museum — and the people who live, work and explore there.
How We Research
We rely on primary and official sources wherever possible: the Governor of Svalbard, the Norwegian Polar Institute, UNESCO, national park authorities, museum collections and published expedition records. When we describe a place, we stick to its stable character and history rather than prices, timetables or opening hours, which change too often to keep accurate.
Our Principles
- Independent. We do not sell trips, take commissions or publish sponsored content. No operator, museum or authority named here has paid to appear.
- Respectful of wildlife. We will not recommend practices that disturb animals, and we follow AECO and local guidance on distances.
- Honest about risk. The Arctic is beautiful and genuinely dangerous. We say so plainly.
- People-centred. Arctic places are home to communities with long histories, including Greenlandic Inuit. We write with that in mind.
